Methodology & Data Sources
Editorial pipeline
PlainISA's reference data is manually curated, not scraped or auto-fetched. Our editorial process reads HMRC publications and the relevant gov.uk pages directly and enters each allowance cap, bonus rate, and statutory threshold into our database with its source URL and the date it was checked, then summarises and explains it in plain language. Source numbers are never altered between source and display, they are quoted directly from the originating statutory or guidance publication and date-stamped.
The process is documented and reproducible. Every figure on PlainISA can be traced to a specific HMRC publication, a Finance Act section, or a gov.uk page. We do not paraphrase numbers into ranges or apply our own interpretations to statutory thresholds.
Primary sources
- gov.uk, Individual Savings Accounts: the consumer-facing official guide, covering eligibility, allowance, types, and key rules.
- gov.uk, Lifetime ISA: the LISA-specific guide covering bonus, withdrawal scenarios, and property purchase mechanics.
- HMRC, ISA Managers Guidance Notes: the technical specification used by ISA providers to operate the wrapper. The primary source on flexibility rules, transfer procedures, and reporting requirements.
- HMRC, ISA Statistics: annual subscription and balance publications used for our trend analysis. Reconciled figures lag by approximately 18 months; provisional figures lag by ~6 months.
- Individual Savings Account Regulations 1998: the original statutory instrument, amended numerous times since 1998. The legal backbone of the ISA framework.
- Financial Services Compensation Scheme: protection limits referenced in our wrapper-specific guides.
Data vintage and coverage
Our current content reflects the 2026-27 tax year rules (allowances, sub-limits, bonus rates), unchanged from 2025-26. HMRC publishes statistical updates annually, typically in late summer. The 2024 multiple-ISA rule change is reflected throughout; statutory references are to the Finance Act 2024 and the consolidated Regulations as of 6 April 2024.
- Geographic coverage: United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland).
- Tax year covered: 2026-27 (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027).
- Last comprehensive review: 17 May 2026 by PlainISA.
How we process source content
- Read the current published version of the gov.uk pages and the HMRC ISA Manager's Guidance Notes.
- Manually enter statutory thresholds, allowance caps, and bonus rates into our config database. Source-cite each figure to its publication URL.
- Editorial Process writes plain-language explainers, decision tools, and goal-mapped guides referencing the entered source values.
- Review against HMRC and gov.uk source documents before publication. Material changes go through editorial review.
- Render at request-time via Astro SSR. Numeric values are loaded from the config database, never hardcoded into prose.
No content is fabricated, interpolated, or editorially modified. Where we provide derived examples (e.g. the 6.25% LISA early-exit cost), the formula is shown explicitly and the inputs are traceable to source.
International references for cross-comparison
For comparative or contextual content, we reference international reference bodies including:
- OECD Finance topic: cross-country comparisons of tax-advantaged savings wrappers.
- World Bank Financial Sector data: cross-country household savings rate and financial-inclusion data.
- UN Economic Development data: long-run cross-country savings indicators.
Limitations
- Tax law changes, Finance Acts can modify allowance caps, sub-limits, or wrapper rules at any time. We refresh content within 30 days of material legislative changes but readers should cross-check critical figures against the live gov.uk pages for time-sensitive decisions.
- Provider-specific terms, flexibility features, fee structures, and product-specific rules vary by provider. Our content describes the HMRC framework, not individual provider products.
- Personal circumstances, the goal-mapping and decision-engine outputs assume average UK saver circumstances. They do not account for personal tax position, non-UK residency, prior pension contributions, or other individual factors that can materially change the optimal choice.
- FSCS protection limits, these are subject to periodic review by HM Treasury. The current £85,000 limit has held since 2019; future changes will be reflected as they are announced.

Calculator outputs are estimates based on stated assumptions; actual outcomes depend on provider rates, investment performance, and personal tax position.
Reuse and Citation
PlainISA's pages are freely citable and linkable, please link back to the specific page you drew a figure from rather than a screenshot, since allowance caps and thresholds change with each tax year. The underlying HMRC and gov.uk source content is Crown Copyright, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0, not the U.S.-style public domain; PlainISA's own editorial framing and page design carry a separate copyright and are not licensed for wholesale republication or scraping.
